Hanging of Frank Clark

Hanging of Frank Clark

Here is a bit of a morbid post for everyone! This is the public hanging of Frank Clark at the Clark County Courthouse in Kahoka, Missouri on Nov. 27, 1903. These photographs were found in 2008 in the walls of an old house in Salisbury, Missouri and were donated to our historical society. These have never been copied before and I would like to thank them for letting me do so.
On July 25, 1903 Frank Clark, "assumed the heinous form of assault" on Miss Ollie Hess who was just less than 17 years old in "a lonely hollow" west of her home. At the back door of the courthouse a scaffold was built and a 14 foot tall stockade to keep most of the public from viewing it. Even though the all of the boards were pulled off which provided a clear view to a couple of hundred people. Tickets were supposed sold even. Walking out of the courthouse door he lightly patted the trap door and clearly said, "Old boy I'll be your friend forever." Frank was 22 years old and up on the scaffold he spoke briefly to everone. "In a clear and steady voice, pitched high enough that all could hear, he sounded a final warning before plunging to his doom. He confessed and said he was sorry for it: said whisky did it and admonished all to take warning against drink, bad habits, and company, not to ramble or gamble, but to remain at home and obey their mothers. He said he was prepared to go." Immediately his limbs were tied and the noose adjusted and the black cap drawn over his head and the trap door sprung and he shot down 6 feet and 8 inches like an arrow. His neck was not broken by the fall and he strangled slowly. The body was allowed to hang for several minutes before the sheriff cut the rope down. He elicited many favorable comments on his calm nerve and his earnest warnings against drink. Earlier in the day he had said he had never been in serious trouble before. He said that his father was a Cherokee indian and his mother was a Mexican. He was said to have been cheerfully conversing with the crowd below through the sheriffs window above earlier also.
By the way, the courthouse has been torn down to the first floor and will post its destruction soon.
